Balancing Freedom and Fulfillment in Freelancing

With the covid pandemic, many workers have been forced to reconsider their careers. For some, the traditional 9 to 5 model has become antiquated and it’s been replaced by the flexibility of flex work and remote work options. But with so much freedom comes the challenge of how to juggle personal responsibilities and professional obligations. The answer, some say, is in finding a new way to balance work and life called Work-Life Integration.

Unlike the goal of work-life balance, which suggests creating hard boundaries between professional and personal time to ensure a dedicated focus on each, the work-life integration approach encourages more fluidity and a more blended approach. This means allowing for the occasional late-night Slack chat with a client, going dark on your email during the weekend to pick up the kids, or working from home during an afternoon of playdates. The goal is to allow for a blending of the two and a more holistic and connected sense of both work and life.

This approach may not be for everyone, and it’s important to consider if your goals align with this type of lifestyle. One concern of work-life integration is that it can lead to blurred and fuzzy boundaries between work and personal responsibilities, which can then become difficult to disengage from work. It’s also crucial to establish clear communication with your clients so that they are aware of when you will be available and that you will be able to work outside of designated “on-the-clock” hours if necessary.

It’s also worth considering your motivations for choosing to work freelance in the first place. If you are motivated solely by the desire to earn more money, it might be challenging to juggle the demands of your work with the needs of your family and personal interests. However, if you are freelancing for the pleasure of being your own boss, building your portfolio and brand, or doing the type of work that makes you happy, then this type of schedule might be more manageable.

While both work-life integration and work-life balance have their pros and cons, it’s important to remember that finding the right lifestyle for you is a journey that will change over time. For many, the solution might be to find a new way to balance work and life by changing the way they think about it.

Work-Life Integration: Balancing Freedom and Fulfillment in Freelancing
The key to both is that you are focusing on what makes you happy and feel fulfilled. It’s likely that the multiple aspects of your life are what make you so valuable to others. So celebrate them and be proud of your multifaceted nature.

And while achieving true work-life balance might be impossible, it’s definitely not out of reach. You can use your newfound freedom to clean up and simplify your work life, whether it’s reorganizing your inbox or getting professional headshots. Creating a tidy space, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly will all help to increase your productivity and your satisfaction with life in general.
